Irene Aranda has emerged as a new value in the Spanish jazz scene. The Andalusian pianist starts her musical
education at age seven, taught by her maternal grandparents. Graduated on the Conservatory of Music in
Granada, Irene Aranda complements her classical training attending piano performance and composition
lessons with Gerardo Lopez Laguna, Guillermo Gonzalez, Fernando Puchol, Pilar Bilbao, Antonio J. Flores and
Javier Darías, among the most notable.
Irene begins in Jazz being self-taught and later she studies with Peter Zack, Eduard Simons, Chano Domínguez,
Nikky Illes, Mike Ph. Mossman, Greg Hopkins, David Pastor, Jordi Farrés Tomás, Pete Churchill, Nya Linn, Perico
Sambeat, Tony Reedus, and so on.
She has collaborated with Paolo Fresu, Toots Thielemans, Maria Pia De Vito, Baldo Martínez and Bojan Z (among
others) on the book by Fabio Ciminiera "Le rotte della musica” (Ianieri Edizioni).
Her first work as a leader Interfrequency 23 7, had great acclaim from the critics and brought her to perform on
several festivals.
“A pesar de su juventud, sus composiciones apuntan originalidad y madurez. Su estilo como intérprete no busca el
virtuosismo o la repetición de las fórmulas que funcionan sino la profundización en su propio lenguaje”.
"In spite of her youth, her compositions show originality and maturity. Her style as performer does not look for
virtuosity or repeating working formulas, but the knowledge of her own language".
Q. Mourelle
“Nel lavoro di Irene Aranda, si ritrovano i suoni della tradizione spagnola, uniti ad uno stile moderno e svincolati
dagli stilemi americani. La composizione diventa, anche in questo caso, un elemento per dare vita a un mondo
sonoro personale“.
“In Irene Aranda’s work, we meet the sounds of Spanish tradition, together with a modern style and freed from
American stereotypes. In this case, composition becomes an item to give life to a personal sound world”.
F. Ciminiera
“Irene Aranda sorprende gratamente por la determinación y arrojo que transmite en su primer álbum. Mención
especial merece la labor de Matthew Baker al contrabajo, que ejerce de anclaje inmejorable en un quinteto donde
Irene Aranda muestra sus excelentes virtudes como pianista”.
“Irene Aranda is a pleasant surprise because of the determination and courage she transmits on her first album.
Matthew Baker’s work deserves special mention, which in the quintet exerts an excellent anchorage where
Irene Aranda shows her great virtues as a pianist”.
